iLL BLU, AKA Darius and James, established themselves as one of top emerging producers in 2008’s UK Underground music scene, creating Princess Nyah’s ‘Frontline’ in their home studio that year, recording vocals in the bathroom. Acting as one of the key songs of the Underground movement, the track was driven by top DJs including Marcus Nasty at Rinse FM, Pioneer, Anusha & Jon James at Vertex FM and Cameo.
As the wider world woke up to this authentic UK innovation, iLL BLU were embraced far beyond the scene. DJing to crowds from Denmark to France to Fabric, the duo embarked on a hot run of classic EPs: in 2011 they released the ‘Meltdown EP’ on Jackmaster’s label, Numbers, followed by Bellion EP on Kode 9’s cerebral Hyperdub in April 2010 and ‘Clapper EP’ in 2012.
The Underground scene paved the way for a new interest in all things 4X4, and iLL BLU’s sound evolved with 2012’s ‘Illusions
EP’ on deep house originator Kerri Chandler’s label, MadTech. Showcasing their advancing deeper tech elements, in 2013 they continued their musical modification by releasing ‘Fall Out,’ a smooth mature sounding chilled out house record featuring Jake Isaac – the first release from their partnership with Climax Music.
Influenced by the musicality of Artful Dodger & Wookie, bass weight of Shy FX, the sampler’s ear of DJ Premier, the soul of Teedra Moses and the future shock production of legendary US R&B producers Rodney Jerkins & The Neptunes, 2014 is sure to be an exciting year for iLL BLU on Island Records.
