Vic Mensa|Down On My Luck|Released 6th July|Virgin EMI Records
Chicago’s rising hip-hop star Vic Mensa releases his new single “Down On My Luck” on 6th July on Virgin EMI Records.
“Down On My Luck” is a brilliant combination of slick vocal delivery with a killer bassline. It’s a huge step on in Vic Mensa’s musical development and demonstrates Vic’s one-of-a-kind talent, able to blend hip-hop and electronica to create something totally distinct. Clearly drawing on various electronic styles, he has delivered a killer smash for the clubs that is destined to be one of the crossover tracks of the year.
The track was written whilst on the road with Disclosure, designed for the dancefloor and works to incredible effect. “Down On My Luck” has been produced by Vic Mensa and Stefan Ponce, Childish Gambino’s DJ.
Vic Mensa released his mixtape, the highly critically-acclaimed “Innanetape” last year. “Innanetape” featured in the Top 10 of many of the most important end of year lists from The Source to MTV, from Complex to XXL and beyond.
It’s a musical joyride, full of character and tumbling rhymes with neo-soul hooks and a laid back attitude. It featured guest appearances from some of the most exciting new talent around – Chance The Rapper, Ab-Soul, Rockie Fresh, and BJ The Chicago Kid.
On top of this tracks were produced by some of the hottest producers such as Boi-1da (Kanye West, Clipse), Hit-Boy (Eminem, Kanye West), Christian Rich (Earl Sweatshirt, Childish Gambino, J Cole), Cam of J.U.S.T.I.C.E League (Lil Wayne), Peter Cottontale (Chance The Rapper) and Om’mas Keith (Frank Ocean). Following its release Mensa threw a vocal on top of Disclosure’s hit “When A Fire Starts To Burn” and demonstrated his versatile lyrical delivery.
This 20 year old Chicago native has been making music for as long as he can remember. Alongside his cohort Chance The Rapper, Vic heads up the collective SAVEMONEY and he appeared on Chance’s “Acid Rap” mixtape. Recent months have seen Vic Mensa tour the US with Disclosure and J Cole, and in Europe with Danny Brown. He returns to Europe later this year with performances at Wireless Festival and Reading/Leeds Festival.
