With a platinum selling, genre-shattering album to her name in 2011’s ‘On A Mission’ and a string of hit singles saw her bridge the gap between UK underground club culture and the upper echelons of the UK singles chart, Katy B has long established herself as the voice of a new generation of UK pop music. Rising from a bespoke scene helmed by Rinse FM, Katy has redefined pop conventions without losing her club edge ushering in a new generation of critically acclaimed singers and performers such as Jessie Ware, Lianne La Havas and Delilah along the way.
Katy has spent most of 2012 in the studio on her feverishly anticipated second album, due in spring 2013. As an end of year present and special treat for her fans, she is now pleased to announce a giveaway EP of four brand new and exclusive tracks, featuring collaborations with artists and friends who need no introduction: Jessie Ware, Diplo, Geeneus, Jacques Greene, Iggy Azalea, Zinc and Wiley
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to work with people I always respected and wanted to work with”, Katy says. “All of the tracks were written quite quickly because I was so inspired by the beats. It was important for me to give people new music before the end of the year, a taster and a warm up of what’s come.”
The Jacques Greene-produced ‘Danger’ is “indicative of some of the darker and more R&B elements that will be on the new album,” says Katy. “Jacques remix of ‘Broken Record’ was my favourite remix off the last album, I love remixes that sound like a new song unto themselves”.
‘Light As A Feather’ takes a beat by Diplo and elevates it to a soulful, vocal-driven re-work. “Massive fan of Diplo, he sent over some beats and that’s the one I most connected with. I was looking to add a hip-hop vibe to the track and it was sick that Iggy Azalea agreed to feature on it”.
“With Jessie (Ware), I heard the track she did with SBTRKT before it was released and was a fan straight away. She played my night and we’ve been in touch ever since. I wrote “Aaliyah” and thought it was a natural story for another female vocalist to guest on. I love this track as well because it reminds me of my earlier recordings with Geeneus and has everything I love about his style in the production”
‘Just Got Paid’ pits hedonistic late nights against electro dancehall and acid-tinged synths. “The beat was called ‘Winner’ by Zinc,” says Katy, “I always heard it out and loved it so much, and I feel my life is complete now that I’ve done a tune with Wiley.”
Oozing confidence and contagious natural excitement, the EP works as a standalone collection of effortlessly brilliant tracks, a fascinating interim step in the forerunning trajectory of Katy’s music, as well as a celebration of everything that is great and exciting about forward-thinking pop and dance music at the moment, leaving us with bated breath for what’s to come next from this uniquely 21st century pop star.
